You Deserve Better (Part 2)

A few weeks ago we wrote that prior to beginning a new fitness routine you need to develop a positive “sense of self.” We discussed how positive self-worth can build motivation to make a positive life change not because we have to, but because we owe it to ourselves! We were surprised by how many responses we received to this posting, both positive and negative.

First, to all who responded, thank you. Your responses tell me that this concept is giving some of you a hard time. Many have even suggested that low self-esteem is actually a motivator for change, or they’ve suggested that weight loss can’t occur without a strong disliking of self. I want to address this viewpoint, as it can lead to a lifetime of sustained dissatisfaction. We can really approach weight loss in two ways: self-loathing (“I exercise because I dislike myself”); or self-esteem (“I exercise because I deserve a healthy life”). If we subscribe to the first pattern of thought, we may very well lose weight, but we are dooming ourselves to a lifetime of negative self worth, and even eventual depression. Remember, the goal is not simply weight-loss, but total life wellness.

We cannot allow ourselves to sacrifice self-esteem in favor of weight-loss. Have you ever met someone who is in great physical shape but seems to hate the way he or she looks? This is a sign of the eventual result of the self-depreciating approach to weight loss – perpetually low self-esteem. Remember, our just as important as our physical health is our emotional wellness. Like I said last time: You deserve nothing more than a happy, healthy life!
