Posted by Chris Powell on 07/15 at 12:18 PM

We’re going to try something new today.  Here’s our first “State of the Nation” video.  We’d like to start sharing some of the many stories our readers and viewers are sharing with us, as well as giving some exercise and eating tips to get you started while our program is still in development.  We hope you like it!

We’re doing the best we can to respond to hundreds if not thousands of emails pouring in, and while we can’t respond to all of them we promise to read every one.  If you would like to share your story you can send us messages or video replies on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, or contact us through ReshapeTheNation.com.

  1. Whoohoo!  Love the State of the Nation!  Can’t wait to get more information on how to work this food thang, especially portion control.  If you don’t have a Stax, how do you know how much to eat??
Saw the TLC show Sunday, will be recommending friends watch it tonight! Go, guys, go!

  2. I am in the middle of watching your show on TLC. I don’t have any weight issues, but am in the midst of going through a rough break up.

I just wanted you to know that your story not only gives hope to those who are struggling with weight problems, but people who are experiencing seeming life-crises of their own.

I was feeling like I would never figure out what I wanted to do for a career and now my love life just got turned all around. But somehow, your strength has given me a little uplift. So, thanks.

  3. I really dont know where to begin. I guess Ill start with this…I’m 27, 5’6, and 240lbs. I am considered morbidly obese. Im a single mother to a VERY active 5 year old, whom I can’t keep up with. It breaks my heart that I can’t physically play with her very long because I can’t breathe. We were in the store the other day and she called me “Fat Momma” and I was so embarrassed and ashamed that my 5 year old perceived me as that. Im currently in nursing school, and I have 12 weeks left before I graduate. I have been approached several times about my weight. Majority of the concerns are how are you capable of taking care of my family member when you can’t even take care of yourself? My fear is that I won’t be taken seriously as a nurse because of my obesity and I dont want that. Im very smart and take wonderful care of my patients.

I love myself on the inside…my personality and sense of humor, etc…but I hate who I am on the outside. I feel that I am very beautiful from the neck up….but I avoid full lenght mirrors at all costs. I want more than anything to be taken seriously and to have the ability to roll around on the floor with my little girl, and to help her practice soccer, t-ball, gymnastics, etc. I keep my daughter so active because Im afraid she will have the same obese tendencies that I have. And I dont want my beautiful little girl to go through that. I dont want people to tell her “Ya know…you have a great personality, your funny, and beautiful…Buuuuut your just to overweight for me.” People these days are extremely cruel and shallow. I only want the best for her….and MYSELF!

I guess my question is: “WHERE DO I BEGIN?”
“I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO NEXT.” “I NEED HELP.”

Mr. Smith you have inspired me like no other. Please know that. I want to lose the weight…I just dont know how.

    Yours Truely,
    Crystal L.

  4. On September 2, 2008, I went on the cabbage soup diet, which I followed every step of the way, this is a one week diet, I did it for three weeks, then continued with eating salads, green vegatable, and meat with water.By December 2008 I was at 140lbs.I walk every morning, I do excercise but I never lost any more pounds. Today 7-17-09 I went to the doctors and found out I gained 15lbs. I know this happened because I dont know how to eat right.

  5. David,

Wow.  I am watching your documentary on TLC and I think you are absolutely inspirational.  You’re incredibly endearing on your mission to win over a girl, and I wish you the best of luck.  Cutest guy on TLC, hands down!

  7. I just finished watching your TLC show, 650lb Virgin, and I was so touched! Your story brought me tears of sadness and joy.

I personally can’t relate to what it must be like to be overweight, however, I have a few obese family members, who I can clearly see how it affects them. I hope your show can provide motivation to them as I know that it has motivated me!

I’m happy that the two of you are best friends, I think that’s just simply amazing!! Everyone deserves to have a best friend like the 2 of you are to each other. Keep up all the good work that you both are doing! And once again, I think you BOTH are amazing guys!

  9. Screaming on the inside, hearing my voice say, “LET ME OUT OF HERE!”  Trapped in a fat body.

Like most overweight people, depression hides just below the surface. Like most, it’s not that I don’t want to lose weight and get in shape. It’s the lack of having someone be there for me on a regular basis. I can talk myself out of exercising and talk myself into eating when there’s no one pushing me to make the right choices. Some people can self motivate, and stick with that. I’m not one of those people. I can start anything. But after the initial excitement is gone, so is my desire to see it through.

I hate what I see in the mirror. I hate hearing myself screaming to get out of this fat body. I sometimes wish I had a t shirt that says “I know I’m fat, I’ve been screaming for years trying to get out of this fat suit”.

So much potential inside me yet I stumble out of the starting blocks.

I’m already worried that Chris and David’s passion to pay it forward, and make a difference, will not be enough for me to actually do something. My negative outlook comes from feeling so depressed lately.

I haven’t given up before I’ve given this a chance. I hope this will be the push I need to start living the rest of my life as a healthy person.

  10. Morning Dave and Chris!

Just watched your incredible story on TLC last night! I think you’re really on to something with ‘Reshape the Nation’ and I wish you all the best and know it will be very successful for you both! It’s very much deserved.

Unfortunatly, the program doesn’t seem to be available to us here in Canada! Do you have any plans at the moment to make it available to us, your neighbour to the north??!

All the best guys - you’re truly an inspiration!

  11. David and Chris, you two are my new favorite guys!  I love you both for the incredible people that you are, and for the inspirational story that you have shared with the millions of people who struggle in their quest to take control of their health and their lives.  Your story is not only one of weight loss and of what can be accomplished with determination and will, but of friendship and the path to the discovery of your purpose and mission in life.  You have touched me in many ways, and I have become a fan of your website.  I am also on a mission to take control of my weight and health, and your site offers me the support I need to accomplish my goals.  YOU GUYS ROCK!
